Last night a debate entitled ‘This House Believes Tuition Fees Should Not Rise’ was controversially beaten, with the Vice Chancellor Sir Steve Smith overcoming the proposition headed by Toni Pearce, the President of the NUS.

The hotly anticipated debate, organised by Debating Society and the Students’ Guild as part of an “education campaign” on the issue, took place in Newman Blue yesterday evening in front of a large audience.

Despite an overwhelming vote in favour at the beginning of the night, the audience were convinced by Smith, formerly a distinguished professor of international relations, by the end of the event.
