An Exeter student has died and another injured in a hot air balloon crash in Turkey.
The student has been identified as Tang Yi, 23, from China who was studying for a Masters in Finance and Management. The injured student was Zhang Zining, who is also studying the same course.
The incident occurred during a sightseeing ride in the Guvercinlik Valley in the Cappadocia region of Turkey on 17 December.
At least eight other people were also injured.
The cause of the crash is unknown and an investigation is underway.
An Exeter University spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by this tragic news and our condolences are with her family. The University of Exeter is offering ongoing support to the injured student.”
According to reports, the balloon departed from Goreme in Nevehir at around 6am local time. Two hot air balloons crash-landed when a sudden wind caused them both to land. One balloon basket was seemingly dragged 150 meters before landing and flipping over.
Paramedics and security forces also arrived at the scene.
