Credit crunch claims music venue ‘Mama Stones’

Wendy Joseph, mother of superstar soul singer Joss Stone, has confirmed that music venue and Mexican restaurant ‘Mama Stones’ has closed

Opening five years ago on Mary Arches Street, the venue aimed to provide support and a stage for aspiring artists in Exeter.

Wendy has expressed gratitude to her loyal musicians and customers, stating the “credit crunch” ultimately brought the club down.

Speaking to the Express and Echo, she said: “Like many other small businesses we have been battling a down turn in sales since the credit crunch and unfortunately the time has come to throw in the towel and close down.”

Last Saturday marked the last night of performances, attended by “wonderfully supportive” customers who are sad to see the club fold.

She continued: “We want to thank all of our customers, staff, bands, and musicians for helping us to keep the venue going for as long as we have and for bringing such a high level of quality music to our stage.”

“A friend reminded me of Dr Suess’s quote; “Don’t cry because it is over, Smile because it happened”.

“So that is what we will do.”
