Its premier sold out in London, and The Gay Word documentary is now heading to Exeter on Saturday 17th October. Investigating the evolution behind the word ‘gay’, this screening will particularly resonate with those interested in queer theory. A recent graduate from Southampton and a freelance journalist for the Guardian, Amy Ashenden’s latest documentary shows her journey around the South East to discover why the term ‘gay’ is now synonymous to ‘lame’- a word itself loaded with history.
Amy scrutinises whether its use is homophobic, or if language can evolve by speaking to an array of people with conflicting opinions; from Stonewall HQ in London, the largest gay rights organisation in Europe, which is campaigning against the negative use of the word ‘gay’, and to the university scholar who claims its innocence.

First premiered at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, London, The Gay Word received exceptional praise for raising issues such as sex education, freedom of speech and identity; it is not just a film for gay people, but for all people. It is now making its way through independent arty venues across the country. If you haven’t been to the Glorious Art House before, its relaxed but stimulating event is the perfect opportunity to experience the quirkiest café in Exeter (it hosts events such as knicker making workshops and sells eccentric art from local artists).
The event will take place from 8pm until 9.30pm and the documentary will be followed by a Q&A with the producer and drinks, with the aim of raising money for the local LGBT charity ‘X-Plore’.
