Most students think of our library as the place where essays are made and happiness dies. Yet, lurking behind all the academia is the University’s own (free) version of Blockbuster. As it seems that very few know about this, I am going to take you through the variety of films on offer – ranking them as I go. First up, films for a night out!
Animal House (1978)

This is a classic. Not only does it get you ready for a night out, it also teaches you how to make the best of it. Featuring John Belushi (the chubbier half of The Blues Brothers), Kevin Bacon getting spanked, and the infamous Toga Party; this film promises to deliver that party spirit you need to accompany that vodka-and-squash combo! Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once a while, you could miss it.” And if that cease the day attitude doesn’t send you off to Cheesys, I don’t know what will. If you’re the type of person who likes singing in parades, “borrowing” sports cars, and all together just being pretty cool, then Ferris Bueller is your man. (****)
Pretty in Pink (1986)

You can never go wrong with John Hughes. Fact. The genius behind The Breakfast Club, and (interestingly) Ferris Bueller; Pretty in Pink is by far his sweetest film. A pretty simple love triangle makes it pretty easy to follow, giving you plenty of time to sort that all-important outfit. Speaking of which, this film dons some of the best of the 80s. (*****)
Pulp Fiction (1994)

The longest film of the bunch, but oh so worth it for the incredible soundtrack and, quite simply, its legendary status in cinema. Star-studded, violent, funny, cool, and boasting one of the best dance scenes ever made, I’d say it’s worth a watch… or two. (****)
Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

The only musical on the list. But, fear not, this is a lot less jazz hands and a lot more camp. A bit of a weird one, yet with a drink in your hand you’ll soon find yourself singing that you’re just a sweet transvestite and performing the ‘Time Warp’ on all the dance floors Exeter has to offer. Saturday Night Fever (1977)

For those who are a little shy on the dance floor, let John Travolta teach you a few moves. With a little bit of help from the Bee Gees and a lot of help from his heels, Travolta is king of the disco. Urging you to practise your pelvic thrusts and put on your best flares, this film will have you in a party mood in no time. (****)
