ECU carol concert could be UK’s biggest

by Hannah Butler

Exeter’s Evangelical Christian Union (ECU) could be hosting the biggest UK carol concert outside London this Monday – with around 4,000 people expected to fill St James’ Stadium for the annual Christmas event.

The ECU Carol Concert 2015 begins at 7:00pm on Monday 7 December. Free of charge, the event is open to all – and promises free mince pies alongside a night of carols, festive performances and Christian celebration.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to be involved with a city-wide event,” ECU President Alex Hills told Exeposé.

“Everyone is welcome!” added organiser Isaac McNish, who described the night as “a perfect time to get together with friends and family and spend quality time together during the month.”

Exeter’s Lord Mayor Olwen Margaret Foggin will give a reading at the event, which also features acapella performances from Semi-Toned and the Sweet Nothings, and music from the Salvation Army brass band. Hosting the event is Evangelist and author Amy Orr-Ewing.

“It’s going to be a night of classic carols, exclusive festive performances and jazzy big band music,” said ECU member Tara Martin.

So why should we come along? “It’s always got a lovely cosy atmosphere, even though it’s one of the biggest in the UK,” she explained. “And of course, free mince pies!”

“There is a great sense of belonging!” added ECU member Tom Vaughan. “For me, Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus Christ, so singing songs about him in such a great atmosphere is just amazing.”

The ECU Carol Service first came to Exeter in 2002. Originally held in the University’s 800-capacity Great Hall, the annual event quickly moved to St James’ Stadium, where it has grown year on year.

Last year’s concert saw more than 3,500 people enjoy music and mince pies at the stadium – and up to 4000 people are expected to attend this year, Hills told Exeposé, “to sing traditional Christmas carols… and hear the incredible message of Jesus Christ entering the world.”
