Exeter is the UK Christmas Capital… of online shopping

Exeter has been crowned ‘Christmas Capital of the UK’ for online sales, according to online retail giant Amazon.

Sales figures show that residents of the Devon city spent more on festive products than anywhere else in the UK this year, knocking Bristol from the top spot.

Popular items in the South West shoppers’ online baskets included Christmas CDs, advent calendars and chocolate selection boxes.

Doncaster, who came a close second, held this year’s record for the most baubles and mistletoe bought, while Southampton showed affection for sparkle, having bought the most tinsel in the UK.

In Manchester, Santa outfit sales soared higher than in any other city, while Liverpool sang their way to the top the tables for Christmas music compilation purchases.

Shoppers in Dunstable, Kent, prioritised crib decoration, buying the most nativity figurines, and Glasgow shoppers snapped up the most Christmas stockings.

“The South West continues to be the champion of the festive season, with Exeter crowned this year’s Christmas capital,” commented Dave Brittain, home store manager.

“These trends give us a fascinating insight into what Christmas means for different areas of the UK,” he added.
