Have you ever played a video game and attempted to insert yourself into that world? Perhaps you envision yourself as a brave, no-nonsense soldier taking on enemy militia in a Call of Duty game, or you’re a super-soldier-spy fighting to save the world in the Metal Gear Solid franchise. Well, for one 22-year-old, this dream has become a reality.
David Bytheway, a professional FIFA-player from Wolves, has just been signed by the Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg, in a potentially revolutionary move that sees the virtual world combine with the real sport. Of course, Mr Bytheway will not be taking to the pitch alongside footballing stars like Draxler, Schurrle, and Bendtner – instead he will be officially representing Wolfsburg at eSports tournaments worldwide, wearing the licensed kit in all competitions.

In an interview with BBC Newsbeat Mr Bytheway stated that “It’s absolutely massive for me, the fact that a team like Wolfsburg have gotten involved with gaming”. Adding that he believes British clubs will soon follow suit, he hopes that the Premier League will get involved in “less than a year”.
