Exeter Pride to return for its 8th year

by Jessica Stanier

Exeter Pride is set to return to the city on Saturday 7th May for its 8th year, as Devon’s biggest celebration of LGBTQ+ communities. Festivities this year include a parade through the city, workshops at Exeter Phoenix, film screenings at Exeter Central Library and evening entertainment until 1pm.

Exeter Pride is a highlight of the LGBTQ+ calendar in the South West and many prominent local individuals are coming out in support of the event.

Shaun Sawyer, the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “Devon and Cornwall Police is proud to support Exeter Pride. Supporting our LGBT communities is one of our core priorities. We want all people visiting our Force area to feel safe and welcome; whether they work, study, socialise or live here.
We hope that by being part of Exeter Pride we will raise awareness of what hate crime is, how and where to report it and what support is available for victims.”

Lee Howell, Chief Fire Officer, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We represent diverse communities and our presence at Exeter Pride shows how much we value and respect people as individuals.”

Councillor Mrs Lesley Robson, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Exeter, has also expressed her support for the event, confirming that the council will again “be flying the flag from the Historic Guildhall.”

The day will start with the annual parade, at 12 noon, from the St Sidwell’s Community Centre on Sidwell Street. More than 2,000 people are expected to take part in or watch the parade. The parade will include a samba band, the Great Western Morris dancers, the North Devon Dogs Trust’s “big yellow dog” and an impressive 50 metre rainbow flag.

The parade will be followed by events at Exeter Phoenix from 1pm, including a drumming circle, ceilidh, self defence and transgender workshops, belly dancing classes, and a panel debate.

Exeter Central Library will be holding screenings of LGBT+ documentaries and short films. More than 50 local businesses and charities will also support Exeter Pride at the marketplace and health zone in Rougemont Gardens.

Evening entertainment from local acts will take place at Exeter Phoenix from 7pm, for which wristbands will be required for entry.

Exeter Pride is made possible with the help of local businesses, donations and volunteers. Neil Clements, chairman, Exeter Pride 2016, said:

“We really need new trustees and volunteers to join the committee to help organise Exeter Pride 2017 so if you’re interested or have an idea that you would like to see happen, get in touch with us at: volunteering@exeterpride.co.uk .
