In their own words, a few of Exeter’s societies for film fans explain why you should sign up this year.
Good evening Exeter, we’ve been expecting you. The 007 Society is the perfect place for James Bond fans of all shapes, sizes, colours, and creeds. Whether you’re a double-oh expert or you just like Daniel Craig’s abs, 007 soc is a relaxed environment to watch, discuss, and enjoy all things Bond. Our range of events includes screenings of your favourite Bond films and the occasional martini-based social. Find us on Facebook to see what’s going on and how to get involved. Nobody does it better than James Bond 007, and in Exeter we hope to continue that tradition.
Whether you consider yourself a seasoned cinephile or casual moviegoer, Exeter Film Society brings together largest range of film fans on campus for a vibrant mix of fun and culture. Look out for a variety of first term events ranging from lively socials to film screenings that take full advantage of Exeter’s impressive mix of multiplex and art-house cinemas. For a movie loving fresher, Film Society is the perfect gateway for students hoping to immerse themselves in cine-culture on and off campus, and form lasting friendships with like-minded film enthusiasts.
If you’re looking to get some boring new flatmates into films (as they should be) then the Campus Cinema is the way to go. Found at the far end of DH1, they screen a range of new releases from the summer blockbusters and the latest Disney film through to Oscar winners and the best picks of indie cinema. At £2 for members, it’s also the cheapest cinema in Exeter, and the committee also put on quizzes, pub crawls and cult film screenings for those looking for a little more. It’s a film society, and then some.
Harry Potter and Quidditch Society:
Accio Freshers! If you’re looking for a society that will bring a little bit of magic to your life, then your metaphorical Mirror of Erised is the Harry Potter Society. A Sorting Ceremony puts you into the house you belong in, trips are arranged to go on the Harry Potter Studios tour, and there’s even a Quidditch team which compete nationally if you feel like you’re the one that can get us the winning snitch! We already have 200 fellow members to accompany you to the Yule Ball and the End of Year Feast, you’ll be well placed to make up for the fact that you didn’t get your letter to Hogwarts.
