Fever and Boutique could be shut down

New-to-Exeter nightclub Fever and Boutique could lose its license, or have its opening times changed, due to complaints of transient noise. The club could be closed in order to prevent residents in the surrounding area near Fore Street and Mary Arches Street from taking further action.

“We are working closely with the local authority to manage noise levels”

The club’s co-owner, Duncan Squires, said, “We are working closely with the local authority to manage noise levels and have implemented a number of measures in conjunction with the local authority”. Complaints to the club were made clear to the public in mid-December.

This came only in the fourth term-time month since the opening of the club, which brands itself on the multiple dance floors and large outdoor smoking area. According to Devon Live, a spokesperson for local resident group St David’s Community Association said they had not had any complaints specifically to Fever and Boutique, but that there is an “already unacceptable night time noise and behaviour” around Exeter.

Exepose spoke to a second year student, who lives very near to another of Exeter’s main nightclubs, Unit 1 (formally Arena). He had the following to say based on his experience of living there since September:

“[The noise] is usually less the clubs themselves than the people leaving drunk and hanging about… particularly if there are takeaways nearby. It can keep you up for a while if you’re not used to it, or if it’s a particular busy night.”

“[The noise] is usually less the clubs themselves than the people leaving drunk and hanging about”

When asked whether he thought the residents near fever had fair complaints:
“I think it’s fair if a club moves in like fever did, but if you’re living in the middle of a city it’s kind of expected that it’ll be louder at night than other places.
“Fever does have a responsibility to be decent to the neighbours but if it’s customers more so then it’s difficult. I’m biased since I like clubs, but I get why people with actual jobs and responsibilities would be mad.”
