Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum celebrated its 150th anniversary on Saturday 21 April. The Museum was officially opened in 1869 after years of planning on the part of local collaborators, and one year already in educational service. The building was originally designed by Hayward, an architect involved with the Gothic revival movement.

Saturday saw the RAMM host a ‘Carnival of the Animals’ parade through Exeter, which according to the RAMM website took place exactly 150 years after the original parade which celebrated the museum’s opening. Throughout the day, attendees took part in carnival mask-making, face-painting, and headdress-making, with carnival experts Shademakers supplying kinetic puppets for the parade. These included several tiger puppets which stood outside the entrance of the museum at one point during the day.

The museum opened late for the anniversary, and hosted a cake-cutting from the Lord Mayor of Exeter, Lesley Robson, who earlier that day hosted a charity coffee morning in aid of Exeter AgeUK.
