Teaching Awards 2018: The Results

The ninth annual Teaching Awards were held on the evening of 1st May by the Student’s Guild and FXU. The event is recognised by the Guild as a celebration of both academic and professional staff in the University of Exeter community, and offers 14 awards over a variety of categories.

The Teaching Awards 2018 received 1305 nominations from staff and students – a substantial increase of 47%, or 418 nominations, from the previous year.

Award categories include those of ‘Most Supportive Personal Tutor’ and ‘Most Innovative Teaching’, won respectively by Accounting and Finance Lecturer Joanne Abraham and Prof. Catherine Leyshon, Associate Professor of Human Geography.

Meanwhile, prizes for Best Subject were awarded to Theology & Religion at Exeter and Renewable Energy Engineering at Cornwall. The Physics department also scooped the subject-wide award for Best Research Community.

The evening was co-hosted by VP Education Bryony Loveless and FXU Exeter President Dean Pomeroy. Notable guests in attendance included Vice Chancellor Professor Sir Steve Smith, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education Professor Timothy Quine and Students’ Guild President Shraddha Chaudhary.

Bryony Loveless, who personally read every nomination, commented that “[t]hey [the nominations] were both moving and inspiring, and show how dedicated and passionate University staff are about providing an exceptional learning and teaching experience to our students.”
