You probably don’t need a reminder, but interview season is fast approaching, and although your main focus is most likely getting those applications in on time, some forward thinking to outfit-planning won’t go amiss for when the fateful day of the interview finally dawns. When it comes to an interview, you might think that it’s more to do with what you say than what you wear, but a smart look will really make a huge difference, after all, first impressions do count.

Interviews can be a daunting process but ensuring that you have an outfit that makes you feel good and look good will definitely put you in the right mindset and help you to impress.

For guys, a safe approach is a pair of dark fitted trousers, a plain button-down shirt accompanied with a tie and the choice of a blazer. You cannot go wrong with this standard, but smart look and it’s completely possible to find these basics in plenty of styles and fits in a range of high street shops without spending a fortune.

For girls, shift dresses are an easy option. The plainer the better, shift dresses are an easy go-to because they don’t require many other components and they are so diverse in price range; whether you want to spend a little or a lot, they prove to be an easy option to slip on while you’re busy doing any last-minute interview prep. Pair them with sheer or black tights depending on the season.

If you’re leaning towards a smart suit look, you have the option of a fitted midi skirt or long-length fitted trousers. Pair these with a blouse or long-sleeve top of your choice for a fool proof interview look. Try to keep your jewellery to a minimum to maintain that professional look.

A necessity, and one thing we’d urge you to spend a little more out of your budget on, is a smart pair of black shoes. Dress shoes work well with a suit for guys, whilst for girls a classic, small heel or flat work well. Make sure you’re comfortable, because if you can’t walk well in your shoes it won’t give off the right impression to the employer. Plus, a good pair of shoes will dress up any outfit!

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable in whatever you choose to wear as the more at ease you are, the more confident you’ll feel in the interview. With that in mind, make sure you start giving some thought to your outfit in advance – it really does make all the difference!
