Single Review: dodie – Boys Like You

Katie Jones reviews dodie’s latest single

Coming from the success of her previous single ‘Guiltless’, the indie-pop artist’s latest single came out with a lot of love from her fans. Her signature light and airy vocals are joined by a crisper tone as she, at times, almost spits out her sharp lyrics. 

The upbeat drums and textured strings create a catchy song that you can’t help but groove to at least a little bit. You can hear how she has built together the smooth harmony of songs such as ‘If I’m Being Honest’ and the upbeat pop rhythm of ‘Monster’ from her previous EP Human. Further similarities to previous songs – such as ‘6/10’ with layered lyrics at the end – demonstrates dodie is carving out a recognisable sound whilst not becoming overly repetitive.

The lyrics explore gender roles and the power dynamic found in relationships with men. She charts the thought process of falling for, justifying, and becoming trapped in a controlling relationship. This is nicely carried through into the music video, which features her dancing with a partner who pulls her back in whenever it looks as though she may stray and dance alone. 

The single art is from the same photoshoot as for ‘Guiltless’ leading to speculation a fourth EP or first album must be on the way. Either way, I am very excited to see dodie continue to grow her sound and develop as an artist.
