Man charged with St. Germans incident and second attack in city

A 31-year-old man has been charged with an alleged rape near Lafrowda. He has also been charged with a second sex assault in the city.

Gheorge Mihai Bertlef has been charged with rape and attempted rape on St. German’s Road, following a report of a serious sexual assault near the University on Wednesday 13 November.

Police have now charged him in connection to a second sexual assault that Devon Live reports took place three days earlier in Well Street, near Sidwell Street, on Sunday 10 November. 

Bertlef is in police custody and will appear before Exeter Magistrates Court on Saturday.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: “Police have today (Friday 22 November) charged an Exeter man with rape, attempted rape and sexual assault.

“Gheorghe Mihai Bertlef, aged 31, of Pinhoe Road, has been charged with rape and attempted rape in connection to an incident that is alleged to have taken place in St German’s Road, Exeter, on 13 November.

“He has also been charged with a further count of sexual assault that is alleged to have taken place in Well Street, Exeter, on 10 November.

Bertlef was also charged with a sexual assault that is alleged to have taken place in Well Street on 10 November.

“Bertlef remains in police custody and is due to appear before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 23 November.”

The incident near Lafrowda took place between 2am and 4am near the Lafrowda accommodation blocks. 

The female victim is currently being supported by specially trained officers.

Police are still appealing for witnesses.
