Discover more about Exeter’s heritage by visiting St Nicholas Priory for Benedictine Day!

‘Cloister & City: the Benedictines in Medieval Exeter’ – Saturday 14th March, 1pm.

On Saturday 14th March at 1pm, Professor James Clark of the University of Exeter will give a lunchtime talk on the daily lives of the benedictine monks of medieval Exeter.

This will be a precursor to the main event taking place a week later, Benedictine Day.

‘Benedictine Day’ – Saturday 21st March, 10am – 5pm. (Free admission).

Benedictine Day is dedicated to the monastic history of the Priory. The day offers an insight into the lives of medieval monks and how they contributed to the literary culture of the city and undertook collaborative work with local institutions to help build the city’s infrastructure.

It will include a tour and talk, available to book through the website: John Allan will conduct a tour of the building, and Professor James Clark will talk about the community of the monastery in Exeter.

“… an insight into the lives of medieval monks and how they contributed to the literary culture of the city… “

We are presenting a new interpretation of the building’s monastic history, family-friendly activities and refreshments from St Sidwell’s Community Centre! Take the chance to learn more about the music and food the monks would have enjoyed.

There will also bee Monastic History Tours on the 24th and 26th March, available to book through the website. This tour will focus on the Priory’s monastic history and the new exhibition.

All of this was achieved through the Priory’s collaboration with the University of Exeter, and help from the Devon Heritage Centre, Devon and Exeter Institution and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. So come along to support our city’s heritage and fascinating medieval history.
