Lost in the music: My Chemical Romance – Fake Your Death

Print Music Editor Bridie Adams discusses her favourite ‘lost’ track by emo band My Chemical Romance.

With Oasis’ demo ‘Don’t Stop…’ having been released years after its creation, now seems as good a time as any to celebrate our favourite unreleased tracks. For me, My Chemical Romance’s ‘Fake Your Death’ stands out as an iconic ‘lost’ song. Released following the band’s 2013 split, ‘Fake Your Death’ was brought out as the first track on MCR’s greatest hits compilation May Death Never Stop You

it makes perfect sense as a track that was released following the band’s demise

The song was fitting as a parting word from the band to their fans, as lead vocalist Gerard Way sings “I choose defeat, I walk away”. It’s an emotional track about surrender and acceptance, and it makes perfect sense as a track that was released following the band’s demise. ‘Fake Your Death’ appeals to past emos and present emos, as well as to those who are not, and never have been, emo at all. It’s everything and nothing like the rest of the band’s discography somehow at once and I’m so glad it eventually saw the light of day.
