Single Review: Jake Bugg – Rabbit Hole

Print Music Editor Bridie Adams reviews the latest single by Jake Bugg.

Jake Bugg’s new single ‘Rabbit Hole’ demonstrates how fine-tuned his sound has become. It is polished yet chaotic, grungy yet danceable. After his year-long hiatus, and then signing with Sony’s RCA Records, Bugg has since released two other singles: ‘Kiss Like the Sun’ and ‘Saviours of the City’. I’m living for all these new tracks. They’re enjoyable for Bugg’s enduring fans while each offering something fresh and unique.

So far, Bugg has four studio albums. Hopefully it won’t be long before we hear his next. Based on what we’ve heard to be so far, it’s set to be an indie masterpiece, a varied and exhilarating piece of work with the more mellow, reflective ‘Saviours of the City’ to the textured, exciting experience that is ‘Rabbit Hole’.

‘Rabbit Hole’ is attention-grabbing. You get absorbed in the beat, in the guitar, dragged right down the rabbit hole with Bugg as you listen. He sings in the chorus, “I’m one knee down the rabbit hole, I think I’ve done it all, how can I convince myself that it’s all in my head?” and it feels dream-like and addictive. Bugg’s vocals fit with the instruments perfectly, his occasional falsetto blending effortlessly with the guitar and the drums. I’ve listened to it about ten times today, and I’m not even nearly done.
