Choc-a-Bloc – GBBO Week 4 Review

Charlotte Kerr brings us a review of Chocolate Week!

This week Britain’s best amateur bakers took on Chocolate week. An ‘in-tents’ episode saw the bakers tackle a Brownie Traybake signature, a Braided Bread Babka (quite the mouthful) in the Technical and a White Chocolate Celebration Cake Showstopper- and there was chaos crammed in from the start.

While previous star baker Marc overbaked his brownies to be more desert than dessert, Sura and Lottie presented equally troubling bakes; one raw that had fallen in the oven, the other covered in a glistening layer of freezer water. In fact, none of the bakers managed a Paul Hollywood handshake. The state of some of the entries left our house wondering if some of us should enter the show for next year.

These feelings were quickly stamped on by a tricky technical where Linda come out on top, presenting a “model Babka”, followed by Laura and Mark. Lottie’s strangely boat-shaped bake, meanwhile, saw her sink to last place. Despite this she managed to somewhat redeem herself with a visually impressive Showstopper. It was too choco-late for Sura whose fate was sealed by an inedible final bake. This is certainly a shame for someone who will forever be remembered for knocking over Dave’s pineapple upside-down cakes back in Week 1 (a welcomed drama similar to Iain’s melted Baked Alaska from series 5).

Star baker went to Mark, with honourable contributions by himself, Dave and Peter in the final Showstopper round. In summary, Week 4 did not disappoint (unless like me you have both Lottie and Sura in your GBBO house sweepstake) and Mark will be hoping the curse of week 4 Star baker never winning the show can be broken this year.
