Houseplant Happiness

Olivia Richards extols the virtues of houseplants!

Over the last few years there has been a sharp spike in people buying houseplants; whether this be because people who don’t have gardens want to bring some life indoors or students simply wanting to personalise a bland student room. I have noticed that houseplants have gained a lot of attention on social media, which has maybe attracted a lot of younger people to join the craze, as suddenly gardening has become cool. Either way I think houseplants are a great way to add greenery to a space and make us feel in touch with nature, which can brighten up your day.

Since moving to university I have adopted two plants of my own, one I have had with me since first year and another was a new purchase this year. I must admit, there is a certain level of pride watching them grow, which gives me a sense of joy. I feel like a proud plant mother; however, my newest baby is currently a bit under the weather. She is constantly losing a lot of leaves, some of which are turning brown, making me feel like a doctor with no prognosis. As I watch her day after day the happiness I felt is overwhelmed with the worry of whether she will make it through the winter.

Although houseplants may not be around forever, they do give us pleasure for being able to care for them and watch them flourish. Even when they do eventually depart us there is always a new range to pick up at your local garden centre or supermarket, which surprisingly can offer a lot of options.
