Maggie John reveals her Arts and Lit resolutions for the New Year, inspiring us to enrich our lives in the coming year.

Although I’ve always been a big fan of fresh starts, delighting in a new week (Monday is my favourite day), or a new month, I’ve never been a massive fan of New Year’s resolutions, never understanding the point of waiting to start. However, at the end of December, I reflected on 2020 and decided I wanted to get the absolute most out of 2021.

I am determined to read more this year and my first resolution, in fact it’s more of a goal, is to read at least thirty books. Twelve days in and I’m on book number two, which I don’t think is too poor an effort. I’ve always got so much out of reading but last year I certainly favoured late nights over a good book; luckily that isn’t such a problem at the moment.

Whilst I want to read more, I also want to expand on what I read. I rarely dabble in classic fiction or non-fiction and I’m determined to do so this year. I believe these genres can teach you so much, so I’m starting with the 455-paged ‘How to be a Liberal’ by Ian Dunt.

That being said, I certainly will continue to read novels, starting with the eight-part Bridgerton series written by Julia Quinn. Like so many people, I spent those bizarre days between Christmas and New Year devouring Bridgerton on Netflix and was delighted to find out there were so many books to maintain my fix. I’m determined to read them all this year.

Even if I don’t necessarily ‘achieve’ all of my resolutions , I know that just trying will have a positive impact on me.

At the end of the year, I became obsessed with Desert Island Discs. I know, I know, I am incredibly late to the party but in 2021 I want to work my way through as many episodes as possible. The first episode aired in January 1942 and the archives are vast. There are 2291 episodes available on BBC Sounds, meaning it would take approximately 96 days to listen to every episode. This resolution may be a bit high in the sky, but I’m willing to give it my best go because I think they’re so interesting and really act as a capture of time.
