A review into the “continued appropriateness” of the 1905 Buller statue, located next to Exeter College, has prompted councillors in Exeter to vote for permission to relocate the “iconic” city statue.

Any decision made on the statue’s relocation would be subject to planning permission and public consultation.

The review has called into question the location of the statue: “outside an educational establishment, which includes young people from diverse backgrounds.”

An estimated relocation of the statue from outside Exeter College would cost at least £25,000.

Dr Todd Gray from the University of Exeter stated that the prominence of the statue outside Exeter College “annoys some people.”

The council review concluded that an estimated relocation of the statue from outside Exeter College would cost at least £25,000.

Concerns about the location of the Buller statue outside Exeter college were also raised in 2017 after a young man died after climbing the statue.
