Breaking news: Safety Checks delay return to University accommodation

Students from Birks Grange, Moberly and parts of Clydesdale Rise will not be able to return to their accommodation tomorrow following the detonation of a World War Two bomb.

A number of properties in Exeter have been structurally damaged from the detonation. Police stated the impact of the controlled explosion had been significant, with debris thrown 250m onto the surrounding area.

The buildings affected will be cordoned and the University emphasises that no-one is to return to any of the buildings listed below until they have been advised that it has been assessed as safe for students to return.

The safety assessment of buildings within the safety cordon is due to finish today but is still ongoing. The 400m safety cordon will remain in place for these assessments, meaning no-one can return to the affected buildings.

Tomorrow the University expects students will be able to return to the following buildings: Clydesdale Court (all blocks), Clydesdale Rise (Block A only), Cook Mews, Duryard, Holland Hall, King Edward Court, Llewelyn Mews, Mardon and Nash Grove.

The University said: “we will confirm the timing and details directly to those students and provide transport and COVID-19 testing for all those returning”. The University also stated that they will continue to ensure alternative accommodation remains available.

The University acknowledged that students’ assessments deadlines will be affected for those who had their preparations disrupted and advised that those affected contact their Hub to request mitigation.

The University expects all academic buildings including the IAIS Building to be open tomorrow, advising those with scheduled on campus work or study to plan to attend. They also anticipate the Sports Park to be open as planned therefore those with scheduled COVID-19 tests should attend as planned.

If you are in need of assistance contact the University’s Incident Line at 0300 3034847 or email rapidresponsehub@exeter.ac.uk

Students displaced in private accommodation in the city are advised to follow instructions from the local authorities and Devon City Council’s helpline.
