Never let it be said that England is a country of bright sunny beaches – but with a significant lack of supply compared to the summer demand, Exmouth surely does not disappoint. At only half an hour away by train and less than a fiver, Exmouth is convenient and affordable – a university student’s two favourite words.

Whilst I would never call it a tourist trap as a doubt any European traveller would leave the beaches of France and Spain for Devon, there a certainly a myriad of things to do. For the more adventurous and adrenaline inclined, there are a host of water sports to satiate you. Known as the ‘regional centre of water sports’, according to the Visit Devon website, there is a plethora to choose from including kite surfing, kayaking and windsurfing.

Furthermore, the quaint Exe Estuary cycle trail that runs from Exmouth to nearby Dawlish, is likely of interest to students based on the numerous bikes that can be found on campus. Instead of hurrying from one end of campus to another, take in the picturesque wildlife scenery, the banks of the estuary and the idyllic landscape of the coastal towns.

If you prefer to simply take in the sights, wait no longer. My personal favourite is walking alongside the water listening to music: there is something about the smell of the sea and the touch of the wind that relaxes the beachgoers. Of course, the sandy beach provides ample opportunity to build sandcastles, go paddling or play on the rockpools. Enjoy the cinematic cliffs of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site which dates back over 250 million years – rest assured that no dinosaurs will be revived.

Do not forget to try the bountiful options of food. Surrounded by the sea, the River Exe and the famed South Devon countryside, Exmouth has an abundance of fresh local produce. With a mixture of seaside cuisine (hello fish and chips) and fine dining, even the pickiest of eaters will find something to sink their teeth into. With a heterogeneous mixture of restaurants and even some celebrity chefs, a deep history that can be seen in the variety of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture and the numerous activities to fill the day with, Exmouth is certainly a summer must.
