Second thoughts: is a change as good as a rest?

For centuries, the colloquial proverb “a change is as good as a rest” has been glibly bandied about to keep the conscientious at their millstones. The way that those with committed work ethics are taken advantage of and manipulated should, however, be challenged. Of course, changing which skill set you are utilising will provide some […]

Not Just a Pretty Face

Director Olorunfemi Fagunwa was rejected as a candidate for directing theatre through the Kenneth Branagh New Writing Award at Windsor Fringe Festival because “the committee & the play’s director have agreed that a male director would be better for this play (Eyes to the Wind)”, according to the email she received in response to her application. […]

Appropriation or appreciation?

The co-option of indigenous people’s cultures by festival fashion producers is a hot topic around this time of year, with the appropriation of native dress for the sake of purely looking good rife at prominent and influential events like Coachella. To reduce objects of spiritual or cultural objects to money-making aesthetics degrades both the people […]

Reader, I’d Marry Him

Has third term left you longing for peaceable solitude rather than the buzz of festivals? Perhaps you just need a few days of quiet before you start checking off that plethora of events clogging up your calendar. Well, no reader’s summer is complete without falling utterly, hopelessly in love with someone who does not exist […]

How should female empowerment be achieved?

Two months ago, Kim Kardashian posted a black and white image of herself covered only by her own hands on her infamous Instagram account, with the caption “#liberated”. With a full face of makeup on and every visible part of her body waxed and illuminated by professional, artistic lighting and editing which has clearly changed the mood […]

Exe-am Fashion

Fashionistas of Exeter rejoice; exam season is upon us, and this year’s trends promise to be big. Literally. Think dark bags under the eyes, expanding waistlines (eating your feelings? You know you want to…), oversized hoodies, 473ml cans of Red Bull and bags so full of unread books that they could burst at the seams […]

Wrecked By Recording

Imagine if exam boards condoned Maths GCSE calculus units completed with the use of a smart phone calculator app rather than a scientific calculator. If Chemistry GCSE practicals did not require live demonstrations by the teacher of the scientific process before students were expected to complete the experiment, and they could just watch a quick […]

Uni research explains Christmas weight gain

Research by the University of Exeter has concluded that it is an evolutionary impulse that causes us to eat more in winter-and starting your diet on New Years Day isn’t the best new years resolution. This joint study with Bristol University claims that in colder months, when natural supply of food is low and our […]

Behind the Looking Glass

On the “golden afternoon” of 4th of July, 1863, Lewis Carroll composed a nonsense tale to delight Alice Liddell, the daughter of his friend and colleague Henry Liddell, and her two sisters, Lorina and Edith. It was a delightful day, which they spent rowing along the Isis of Oxford. Three years later, this spontaneously composed fantasy was published under […]

With a dash of the Devil

Halloween is the perfect time to try out recipes that you’ve always considered a bit beyond your comfort level, because if you botch them, everyone will assume that your bake’s semi-destroyed aesthetic is totally intentional, and oh-so-seasonal. The bake itself is moderately tricky, but the hairy bit is mostly in the icing, so if you want an […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
