Battle of the Bands 2017: Meet the Finalists

Here we are then. The seminal student music event of the year has come back around. Five remaining bands, the cream of Exeter’s rock and pop crop, will take to the Lemmy to play it out for a chance to join the BOTB Hall of Fame. So we’re giving you the rundown on this year’s […]

Live Review: Poltimore Festival Launch @ Phoenix, Exeter

At times Exeter Uni’s music scene leaves something to be desired. It might be easy to turn your nose up at its modest institutions and its humbly strumming virtuosos, especially if you’ve been snuffling around Bristol’s musically dank sanctums – dripping with edge and bloated with vape smoke. While they may have a cold-war cargo […]

Live Review: Exeposé Music Freshers Showcase

So it’s the other day right. There’s me, it’s just before Freshers week, I’m hyped for the second annual Exeposé Music Freshers Showcase at The Cavern, of course. Bands are booked and everything is going swimmingly, only thing is it’s on fire. What do you think “closed for the forseeable future” means? To me, it […]

“A rock band, not a bleedin’ splish-splash show!”: An Interview with Black Thistles

How does the South West shape a rock band? For the Exmouth-born Black Thistles it gave them a solid alt-rock sound and a penchant for smart songwriting. They’re set to perform at Exeter’s hottest upcoming event – Poltimore Festival, a revivified independent music festival, more edgy than a vaping dodecahedron, so I called band-mates “Paul” […]

EP Review: Exitpost – Nami

Self-described as “Tokyo-born, NYC stuck”, electronic artist Ken Herman, or Exitpost, gets an Exeposé look-in as a friend of trendy, Exeter-based, electronic pals Delmer Darion and grooves in the same wave of post-Aphex Twin, post-Kanye bedroom producers that grew with the increased accessibility of Macbooks and Logic Pro. The availability of electronic music and it’s […]

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke confirmed as guest of honour at Pret a Manger opening ceremony

Amazingly, in my first week as online music co-editor, I’ve had the luck of landing the most insightful, and at the same time, most Exeter-relevant story in contemporary music. Let me tell you how it happened. This morning I was awoken by a knock on my door. Groggy-eyed, I opened it to reveal enigmatic Radiohead […]

Did you hear about… SpongeBob, Bubble Bowl – 7th September 2001

A theme throughout this column has been when things don’t go as planned. This makes for some shocking and resonant moments, sure, but we go to gigs to see it go well. So to break the mould I’ll talk about a moment where the stars aligned and everything went oh-so-right. There are a lot of […]

Album Review: Animal Collective – Painting With

Animal Collective Painting With February 2016; Domino   Not many artists make ten albums, especially in the indie scene, which for all its self-awareness is definitely the least inviting. Anyone who achieves any success or notoriety is battered with cynicism, sneers grow as sales do, and affection for anything can be drenched in up to six levels […]

Column: Did you hear about… Limp Bizkit – Woodstock Festival, New York – 24th July 1999

“The day music died”, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, Woodstock ’99 was shocking for a lot of reasons. While I could discuss what exactly went wrong with the concert via a number of the performing artists, I find that often the best way to represent any tragedy is through the lens of Limp Bizkit. […]

“Did you hear about…” Enrique Iglesias at Plaza de Toros de Playas, Tijuana – 31/05/15

I started off this column by focusing consecutively on Tupac, then Kurt Cobain. These are two undisputed icons, deserving of their places in the annals of music history and the psyche of everyone who wants to find their way in popular culture. Despite their racial difference, they now sit together at the spiritual table of […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
