Gym gripes: What not to do

Bugbears: we all have them. Whether it’s open cupboard doors, bad manners, or that switch left on when not in use, everyone has something that, in the immortal words of a certain Peter Griffin, really ‘grinds their gears’. But in the gym we find the ingredients for a whole new world of such shocking iniquity. […]

5 cardio alternatives for gaining muscle

The festive feasting is complete, the January exam season has passed, and now it’s time to really get back on track in the gym. You want to lean up for the summer, and the ‘dreadmill’ looms large on the horizon… or does it? Cardio doesn’t have to be the demon that keeps you awake at […]

Carb Times: Healthy, Nutritious Recipes

‘Tis the season, and I’m sure you’re all looking forward to stuffing your faces with outrageous volumes of turkey and roast potatoes on Christmas Day (which is perfectly OK, because you’re ‘bulking’ right?) However, before you let the waistband completely loose, here are some ideas for carbohydrate accompaniments to your meals which will ensure that, […]

Bodybuilding: The obsession question

It’s an oft-debated subject: is bodybuilding a matter of fitness, or of sheer vanity – bordering even, some critics might add, obsessive? Can spending hours rigorously controlling your diet and flogging yourself on the weights bench, just in order to sculpt that perfect body, really be a healthy lifestyle choice? I would like to argue […]

Maintain Your Motivation

As we slowly creep towards the end of term, and have to deal with the added stresses of those nasty deadlines (not to mention rapidly depleting bank balances), it’s easy to let the volume and quality of our training slip up. At times it can feel as if any free time is being taken up […]

The business of fitness: Omar Isuf

This week I want to talk about one of my favourite members of the YouTube fitness community, and someone who you may not necessarily be familiar with. For those who don’t know, Omar Isuf is an increasingly popular Canadian YouTuber and personal trainer, ” a self-made man” in his own words, who has succeeded in […]

Fridge fillers: Five essential muscle foods for students

Building muscle as a student isn’t easy. You’ve endured the mountain voyage to Streatham Sports Park and coughed up that hefty membership fee, and now you’re in the gym pumping iron to your heart’s content. But there’s a problem. As we all know, weight training is nothing without a reasonable diet to back it up […]

Internships- more than making tea?

Why do we apply for internships? Do they really mold us into more competent professionals, or just tick another box for that all-important CV? What do we ultimately stand to gain from them? We’ve all heard the jokes and clichés; many of us have even experienced those tragic hours of being a glorified tea-runner. However, […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
