Santa or Secret Scrooge? (Gift Guide)

We’ve all been there. You’re given a £10 budget and told to turn a pumpkin into a carriage. Most people, tragically, resort to type. We all know those gifts; the ones that look pretty in a bow, but will ultimately be thrown onto the pile of other pointless crap in our life. This pile includes fingerless gloves, just for the […]

On mental health | An interview with Norman Lamb MP

His party may be out of power, but Norman Lamb’s voice is stronger than ever. As one of eight remaining Lib Dem MPs, Westminster duties continue. “Norman has to be in the chamber, could we possibly reschedule?” requests his aide. Yet Lamb’s greatest cause transcends politics. On the day of our interview, a week later, Lamb introduces himself with “apologies for […]

SSB: Not so safe?

Icame, I saw, then sanity conquered and I left at the stroke of midnight. I regret to say that the Cinderella analogy ends here, for my experience of last year’s Rio Safer Sex Ball was anything but a love story. The majority of arrivals would fail to pass the Arena bouncers. Alcohol is used to […]

Faith, trust and Pixar dust

A wise fish once told us to just keep swimming. Throughout its history, Disney has had to do just this. Despite periods of sparkling “renaissance” (1990s), other times have been seriously lacking in the pixie dust department. The noughties were a prime example of this. With the exception of Princess and the Frog, Disney turned away from hand-drawn […]

Inside the student mind

University life presents a unique challenge. The move itself can unsettle even the most assured of individuals; from social and academic pressures, to the responsibilities of independent living, it comes as little surprise that 89 per cent of students are reported to feel more anxious after arrival. Despite this, the healthcare system does little to […]

A lifestyle or a lie?

I have a guilty confession. Two weeks ago, I added Kylie Jenner on SnapChat. Well, I added Kylizzlemynizzle, which quite frankly sounds like the dozenth version of a Chinese whisper. Yet still I clicked follow. Still I decided to see what goes on behind the scenes of King Kylie’s life. It turns out, not an awful lot… unless you count head nodding, […]

Let’s Get Satirical: The Trumpkin Spice Latte

Donald Trump’s latest business venture hopes to inject some Star quality into his campaign. In collaboration with global brand Starbucks, he has launched the “Trumpkin Spice Latte” just in time for Halloween. It comes in light of rumours that the “Donald Trumpkin” will be the most popular costume of 2015, along with Ja Ja Bieber […]

From White House to West House

MONDAY Kanye releases his campaign slogan: “Four, five seconds to change the world.” Later that day, Justin Timberlake publicly expresses his anger that it rips off his ‘4 minutes’ hit with Madonna. Timberlake is fuming. The two already have a patchy relationship after Kanye called him out for crying a river at the 2013 Grammys. […]

Exepresso art

Coffee is an art. Don’t believe me? Try asking the 417,354 people who use #coffeeart on Instagram – aka the Louvre of 2015. To save you some time, I account for about 50% of these hashtags. Yet there’s no denying that those milky, silky hearts *M&S advert voice* are in a gallery of their own. From the […]

The Arena obituary

Arena, the club everyone knew, the club that triumphed in the Exeter clubbing scene. Arena. Where do we begin? From Cheesy’s to Dirty, Sexy People, you were the club of the people. You rejected stereotypes. You let in rahs and rogues alike. Your unofficial anthem should have been ‘We Are Family’.  Then they announced they were […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
