An Experience of Fraternity Pledging- Problem or Positive?

‘Bad Neighbours’, ‘American Pie’, and ‘Blue Mountain State’ are all films and programmes that we watch in our teens and early twenties wondering if this actually represents what American College life is really like. Chad and Troy high-five Brent the high school jock in their varsity jackets before swiftly wedgie-ing a dork and a couple […]

Understanding America’s Obesity Crisis: Are Citizens Victims or Perpetrators?

After making the jump across the pond and living in Virginia, America for five months, what became increasingly apparent is the profound difference to Britain (and anywhere else I’d ever been) in average weight. Previously, I’d only ever seen rare quadruple XL sizes on Jacamo adverts and so believed it myth, nay; legend, that such […]

The Art of Hacking

Hacking. The art of the virtual break-in, where burglary is made into binary. No matter how advanced your security software may be, you are always at risk of being hacked, because therein lies the glorious danger of the practice. No system is safe enough, no passcode too complex, no equation unsolvable, all is, in essence, […]

Pokémon GO: An Introduction, Not a Full Product

The game of the Summer, by complete surprise to pretty much everyone everywhere; even those clued in upon everything Pokémon were cautious of this game. On the 20th of September 2016, YouTube released a video to its official channel entitled Getting Started with YouTube Heroes, a guide to their newly launched community moderation programme of the same name. At the time of writing, that video is the 11th most ‘disliked’ in the site’s history, and the Heroes programme itself remains […]

HelloGames: a failure in managing hype

No Man’s Sky is inarguably one of the most anticipated games in recent years, generating buzz across many communities with its promise of exploring the ultimate sandbox: space. The hook was deceptively simple: you have a spaceship, and you travel through the universe, exploring planets and discovering new biomes, minerals, plant-life, and animals on every […]

Far Cry 2 and narrative harmony

Twenty hours into my time with Far Cry 2 I had shot, hacked and burnt enough men to fill ten graveyards. I set about scouring the remnants of a freshly waged battlefield with mechanised efficiency, stripping and looting the bullet ridden, charred airstrip of any supplies. The silence was punctuated by agonised screams: a survivor, […]

Gamers need to grow up

The dialogue in question is from a group in the game called the “Five Fun Guys” where someone’s career will be in ruins, and predicts the newspapers will call it “Shufflegate: Exposed” (because of […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
