Chaos in Catalonia: All you need to know about the Catalan referendum

International media has been captivated by the referendum for Catalonia’s independence from Spain, which finally took place on October 1 after weeks of heated national debate. Despite resistance from military police and insistence from the Spanish government that said referendum was illegal, 90% of the almost 2.3 Catalonians who voted on Sunday have elected political […]

General Election roundup: Conservative disaster and deals with the DUP

In an extraordinary blow to the Conservatives, the election has ended in a hung parliament. Despite burgeoning pre-election confidence and a staggering 17-point lead when the Prime Minister called the snap election back in April, the Conservatives have failed to form a majority — securing just 318 seats of the required 326 in the House […]

May’s marching on Tory triumph. But where’s she going?

Listen. The sound of the Tory yomp to triumph on June 8 is deafening. Labour’s sporadic venture over the top, and Mr Farron’s plucky bunch of guerrilla fighters feature as mere radio static in comparison. But one thing is shared. They all contribute to the crescendo of hot air and dribble currently being inflicted on […]

General Election 2017: are we living in post-populist times?

The opportunism of Theresa May’s U-turn for an early general election reveals an exploited populist effort, where the dynamic potential and energetic ire of anti-establishment politics have been re-channelled to serve the elites it was originally formed to oppose. To properly understand this historic development of British politics, we must also consider the broader expansion […]

Uluru/Ayers Rock: Why names matter and why you shouldn’t climb it

Ask most Brits what the name of the giant rock formation that stands in the centre of the Australian outback is, and they will likely say Ayers Rock. However, since coming to Australia I have heard it called most often by a different name: Uluru. This is the name given to it by the Aboriginal […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
