Review: Base and Barley

B ase and Barley is the latest venture from Exeter’s poshest coffee shop chain, Artigiano. Situated just a stone’s throw away from The Old Firehouse and across from the (in)famous King Billy pub, the restaurant opened its doors last week, offering pundits and foodies alike the chance to sample their Italian sourdough pizzas, craft beer and cocktails. […]

Editorial: Boozing for a bruising

Everyone has a story involving a bouncer. Whether it was about that night your mate got kicked out of TP for spilling a drink, or that time you weren’t let into Arena (sorry, Unit 1) because the guy on the door thought you were on MD, it seems like almost everyone has something to say […]

Hot, Not, Long Shot, Forgot: 23/11/15

HOT: Joy Again ‘Looking Out For You’ Pennsylvania-based five piece Joy Again are a recent and pleasantly surprising discovery. Their first single ‘Looking out for you’ is due to be released in January and delighted me with its fuzzy genteel indie pop rhythms and Darwin-Deez-esque vocals. A real pick-me up for a dreary November day. […]

Editorial: A diversity dilemma

White and middle-class. This is the stereotype that permeates both Exeter and its University. In this issue we decided to investigate what this really means for students living and studying here. Considering Britain is now famed for its multi-culturalism, the stats around Exeter’s diversity are pretty scary. The results were unsurprising, with the overall numbers […]

The Exeter Revue Comedy Open-Mic Night – Review

The Exeter Revue hosted its first Open-Mic night of the year at Oddfellows pub on 11 October, with a whole host of new and old students performing to a sizeable crowd. The event, hosted in the cosy surroundings of the upstairs section of the New North Road pub, is well attended by a mixture of […]

Album Review: Swim Deep – Mothers

Swim Deep Mothers 2 October 2015   If there was one criticism that could be made of Swim Deep’s (mostly) excellent debut album Where The Heaven Are We, it was that the wishy-washy nostalgia pop was somewhat lacking in depth; inoffensive and pleasant enough, yet almost certainly playing on the side of safe (presumably to keep […]

Album Review: The Libertines – Anthems for Doomed Youth

The Libertines Anthems for Doomed Youth 11 September 2015, Virgin EMI   For Libertines fans, Anthems for Doomed Youth represents a metaphor for something the naysayers never thought possible: a new album from a band many had consigned to the history books. A botched Reading festival headline set in 2010, followed by last year’s gigs at Hyde […]
