Bridie Adams reviews Justin Bieber’s comeback single ‘Yummy’

Justin Bieber’s first single of this decade, ‘Yummy’, is like Marmite. It’s hard to decide whether to love it for its catchy, danceable beat, or hate it for its repetitive chorus, which is, undeniably, extremely cringe-worthy. Personally, I find myself somewhere between the two. On the one hand, it is sure to cause an eyeroll or two when it comes on the radio (it would be hard not to find Bieber’s constant “yummy-yum”-ing at least slightly embarrassing). On the other hand, much like Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road or Lil Pump’s Gucci Gang, it’s a very unfortunate guilty pleasure.

I can’t say I’m surprised by the style of ‘Yummy’ – it is not vastly different from Bieber’s previous work, or from some other recent chart music, aside from perhaps being that little bit more annoying. I somehow feel both bored and entertained by it every time I hear it.

Bieber’s new single could be good if I was at a party and drunk enough to ignore the relentless cringe of its chorus and the lyrics that so desperately want to be sexy but just can’t quite manage to be. However, that doesn’t stop the tune getting wedged in my head for several days at a time, so Bieber must have done something right.
