Food project feeds 39 families in Exeter over Christmas
Statistics from the Trussell Trust have reported a national surge since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic as tens of thousands of people have needed to use food banks for the first time. In response to this, the Exeter Hot Food Project has been providing three hot meals each week to families in need since May 2020 (including during the school holidays).
This project gave 39 families in Exeter the gift of a hot meal this Christmas. Adults and children who may otherwise have gone hungry this holiday season were supported by the 40 volunteers who provided a total of 576 hot meals as well as a bag of seasonal treats for each family.
Local organisations such as the Exeter Food Bank and Exeter Food Action, as well as the support from volunteers, have enabled this initiative to confront the issue of local food poverty. Ross Maynard, one of the coordinators of the Hot Food Project, said “The response on the doorstep from families has been heart-warming, and our volunteers and supporters have been marvellous.”
