Flora Runnacles provides some much-needed costume inspiration for Halloween, from simple to the more elaborate.

A study by Ipsos in 2021 shows that on average 43% of Britons celebrate Halloween every year and as the much-loved holiday is just around the corner, celebrators are posed with the big question: what costume should I wear? When searching “Halloween costume ideas” on Google, more than 354 million results are produced. Although seemingly a trivial question, it is surprising how difficult it may be to answer. So if you are stuck or feeling a little overwhelmed about your costume, here are some suggestions to get you started.

It’s not always easy or affordable to have an intricate costume, so let’s begin with the basics, my
favourite being the Vampire. Not only does it effectively meet the brief of looking ‘spooky’, but
with just a cape and fangs making up the signature look, it is one of the easiest costumes to
throw together. Similarly, going as a Witch or a Ghost is always a guaranteed way to meet the
Halloween requirements. For those, who have the time (and room in the student budget) to go
the extra mile, Zombie, Clown, and Evil villain costumes are definitely the way to go.

If scary costumes aren’t your style dressing up as your favourite character from a film or TV
series released this year ensures you’ll have a trendy outfit. For example, going as Batman or
Catwoman from Matt Reeves’ newest adaptation. Conversely, if you are a Marvel person then
dressing as Doctor Strange or Wanda Maximoff from the newest Multiverse of Madness film
could be the perfect costume. To guarantee a trendy costume, leaning on Tiktok ideas is a safe
bet. This year I’ve seen pirates, fairies, and group costumes of Gru and the Minions pop up on
my feed.

Whether you produce a high-quality costume or not, I hope these ideas somewhat inspired you
or at the very least showed you what you don’t want to go as. Wishing you a safe and fun
Halloween!
