Despite being one of the most popular and easily recognisable landmarks in Exeter, students and the public alike are often unaware of the great opportunities that Exeter Cathedral holds. Each year, from the start of the Christmas Market until the end of January, entry is free, offering many people their first opportunity to see the cathedral’s English-decorated architectural style. Interestingly, although it was founded in the 11th century, some of the most significant developments took place between the 12th and 14th centuries, such as the projecting balcony, also known as the ‘Minstrel’s Gallery’ delicately carved with angels playing instruments. Or, if you are someone who likes ticking things off your bucket list, the cathedral boasts the longest medieval stone vault in the world! These incredible architectural feats, along with soaring stained glass windows and its rich medieval history, offer a breath-taking trip out, making it a must-see during your time in Exeter.

Yet, you may be thinking, the January period has now passed; surely I now have to pay to enter? Well, fear not! If you live within the EX1-EX4 postcode area, you have the opportunity to apply for an Exeter Resident’s Card, which allows unlimited free entry during normal visiting hours. And luckily, the process is easy! Simply download the application form from the Exeter Cathedral website and send it to the provided address, or, if you are in the area, you are welcome to hand it in at the front desk of the cathedral. Once the application has been processed, you will have your very own resident’s card! Stunning architecture is only a few clicks away.
