Buying a gift is never easy, especially if the person you are buying for is picky or doesn’t give you any idea of what they want. We have all been in a situation where a friend, relative or partner has said the dreaded words “you don’t have to buy me anything”, knowing full well that a present is expected. Worry not, though, because this helpful guide is designed to give you plenty of options for all kinds of people (and it doesn’t hurt to support a local business!).
Hyde and Seek
This quirky shop and cafe on Paul Street boasts some of the most interesting gift ideas in Exeter. From coffee table books, candles, art prints and everything in between, it is the perfect place to find presents for an artistically inclined friend or family member. While browsing the wares, I would also recommend helping yourself to one of their delicious cakes!
Bookbag
Forget Waterstones! Bookbag, an indie bookshop nestled within McCoy’s Arcade, is the perfect place to browse a diverse array of literary fiction, featuring authors from all over the world. While the shop is small, it always feels very friendly and offers titles that the recipient who seems to have every book won’t already own.
Hutch
For anyone who has family and friends with a green thumb, look no further than Hutch. A plant shop near The Depot, Hutch contains many beautiful houseplants: from cacti for the friend who kills every plant they own to anthuriums to add a luxury touch to your parent’s home.
Chococo
While not an independent shop, I have chosen to spotlight Chococo as it is a small business based in the South West that takes pride on its artisan chocolates. Using local ingredients and sustainable goods, they craft delectable treats that are perfect for any chocolate lover. Try some of their whimsical chocolate animals or, if you have more money to spend on the gift, pick out some chocolates and create a customised box with your loved one’s favourite flavours.
I hope this guide is useful for the next time that you go shopping for gifts in Exeter!
