Just one hour’s drive from the city of Exeter, Exmoor National Park is a hilly moorland area in North Devon and West Somerset. From tranquil walks to charming villages and incredible views, Exmoor has so much to offer. Designated as a National Park in 1954, they are now celebrating their 70th anniversary, and are holding a weekend of guided walks and other various activities on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th of September. This area is known for its unique sea cliffs, starry skies, sparkling streams, and the incredibly rare Atlantic Rain forest which supports an extremely rich vegetation mix. Exmoor is also home to the largest herds of red deer in England, along with the Exmoor pony which is the oldest native pony breed in the country. As the National Park approaches their 70th anniversary, they have stated that they are seeking to do more for both nature and people.
#ExmoorDay on the 19th of October, is the official date of their designation. This year, they are looking to the future of the park through their 70th Anniversary Appeal for CareMoor. Their 70for70 appeal is asking any supporters to raise £70 in any way they can. On their website they have suggested many ways to fundraise, such as car washing, a quiz night, a sponsored read-a-thon, and to take part in their Virtual 70-mile walk. You can register for their virtual walk online, where you simply log your steps and can take in the Exmoor scenery, whilst raising money for the preservation of the area.
They will also be revealing a new crossing, Great Bradley Bridge, in the Barle Valley on the 19th October to add to the occasion.
Exmoor is a spectacular National Park and being so close to our university, is certainly worth a visit. During stressful deadlines and constant work, I would definitely recommend a day trip. Whether that be to hike or to explore the little villages, their 70th anniversary could be the perfect time to visit!
