On the evening of Monday 8 October, Wales & West Utilities investigated a reported gas leak in the Pinhoe Road area.

Residents reported a strong odour of gas in the area surrounding Polsole Bridge. Upon examination, the engineers discovered a leak in the gas pipes beneath the road. As a result, rapid repairs took place between Hamlin Lane and Monk’s Road, an area with a mixture between residential and student housing.

In a statement, Scott Pengilley, Wales & West Utilities Operation Manager for Exeter, said: “We were called Monday evening to the Pinhoe Road area of Exeter after reports of a smell of gas in the area. Our engineers found a leak on a gas pipe running beneath Pinhoe Road and worked to repair it.”

“In agreement with Devon County Council and so that road users, pedestrians and our colleagues were kept safe while we worked, we closed a lane along Pinhoe Road at its junction with Widgery Road.”

“Our engineers found a leak on a gas pipe running beneath Pinhoe Road and worked to repair it.”

As a consequence of these closures, there was no available right turn from Pinhoe Road into Widgery Road for nearly 24 hours.

He continued “We are pleased to say that we have now completed our work and fully reopened the road.”

“We appreciate the patience of local people while we’ve been working. We know that working on roads such as this is not ideal, but it was important that we fixed this leak now, in order to continue to provide a safe and reliable supply of gas to homes and businesses.”
