Exeter Cathedral banned South-West England UKIP Candidate Carl Benjamin from partaking in the hustings for the European Elections that would take place on 23 May. Benjamin, also known as political YouTuber “Sargon of Akkad”, is currently under investigation for rape comments towards Labour MP Jess Philips back in 2016.

Exeter Cathedral cited that they believed Benjamin’s presence “may cause a risk to public order, given a number of incidents over the last few weeks” and suggested UKIP send “another candidate from its list of six candidates standing for election in the South West region”.

In response to this, UKIP’s Devon Chair Margaret Dennis said the decision was “outrageous”. In the run-up to the European Elections, Benjamin toured South-West England, making a late appearance at Exeter Quay on 13 May after his tyres got slashed in Totnes. The results for the European Elections will be released on 26 May.
