Exeposé’s new online sports editor Ed Alexander takes a look back at some of the lesser-known sporting stories from the last seven days
And so we return for another round of Things You Might Have Missed from the world of sport this week. In this edition, we take a look at the lower league footballer who’s better than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo combined, a new chapter in the extraordinary life of Sonny Bill Williams, and plenty more.
Messi or Ronaldo… or Doyle?
When fourth-tier Bradford City looked at their squad of players in the summer, the coaches decided there was no space for Irish forward Eoin Doyle. To secure some game-time in the 2019/20 campaign, he had to look elsewhere, ultimately settling on a loan switch to fellow League 2 club Swindon Town.
What a move that has turned out to be for both Doyle and his new employers. He netted seven times in his first five matches with the Railwaymen, with the odd hat-trick or brace then helping him reach 14 goals for the season.
That makes him the highest scorer in the top four divisions of English football, and it’s a tally that also betters the combined totals of Messi and Ronaldo. Is this our next Ballon d’Or winner?
All Things Come to an End
American golfing icon Phil Mickelson had been on a record-breaking run of 26 years in the top 50 of the world rankings. That stellar streak came to a close on Sunday as he finished joint-28th at the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament in Shanghai.
Yes, after 1353 consecutive weeks amongst the best half-century of golfers on the planet, Mickelson’s marvellous run has reached its end. Nevertheless, his absence will almost certainly be short-lived.
The Wolfpack Returns
We had a peek at rugby league side Toronto Wolfpack last week following the news they could host a few Super League ‘home’ games on Dutch soil. Well, they’re back as the Canadian team’s reputation continues to grow in the wake of Sonny Bill Williams signing for the club, as reported by BBC.
Fresh from securing a bronze medal at the rugby union World Cup, the multi-talented Kiwi has once again switched codes, agreeing a bumper contract with the Wolfpack. That’s some way for them to announce their arrival in the English top-flight.
A Comeback for Wenger?
Niko Kovac was relieved of his duties at Bayern Munich following a 5-1 hammering at his former team Eintracht Frankfurt. Of course, the Bavarians already have a shortlist of potential replacements, with the Guardian claiming that Arsene Wenger is amongst the contenders.
We’re into the second season since the Frenchman hung up his long overcoat and vacated the Arsenal managerial position, but it seems we may not have seen the last of old Wenger. Could he get Bayern back atop their European throne?
Cowboys and Giants Bow to the Cat
We finish with a light-hearted story from across the pond, where the New York Giants’ clash with the Dallas Cowboys was interrupted by a cute, little streaker.
Play was stopped at MetLife Stadium as a black cat raced across the turf, mesmerising fans and coaches alike. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the game promptly resumed and the Giants were beaten by a resounding 37 points to 18.
