Plans revealed for mass COVID testing of 50,000 students on return to campus

Prior to the third national lockdown, the University of Exeter announced plans to test all students for coronavirus on their return to campus for the start of the new term.

Plans for mass testing had been agreed at a Team Devon Local Outbreak Engagement Board meeting back in December, led by Director Sean Fielding. Mr Fielding predicted that the University would administer 50,000 tests in January alone.

Director Sean Fielding predicted that the University would administer 50,000 tests in January alone.

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement of a third lockdown in England, the University confirmed on 5 January that they would continue with plans to offer free testing services to all students, including postgraduate researchers, which will continue until the start of February.

A postponed return of students to campuses has made the January target unattainable. Students that have returned to Exeter and Penryn are still encouraged to book a coronavirus test via the Rapid Response Hub.
