Transitional tunes: Phoebe Bridgers – I know the end
Senthur Shanmugarasa shares his definitive autumn tune
When Indie IT girl Phoebe Bridgers embarked on writing Punisher, she probably didn’t realise she was writing a soundtrack so perfectly suited to a world marred by pandemics and lockdowns .
As a result, I Know the End seems to embody the Autumn of 2020, that of uncertainty and gloom.
With lyrics such as “There’s no place like my room” and “I’ll lay around and lay back down”, Bridgers’ dark folk ballad captures the change in seasons, from the hedonism of summer to colder and more depressing autumn.
This coupled with the apocalyptic nature of the last verse makes this a seemingly a fitting tune in the current crisis. Despite the crescendo at the end of the song Phoebe, in the face of a crisis, simply shrugs ‘I guess the end is here”. Maybe we should do the same as we head into the autumn of discontent.
