The University of Exeter’s reputation is nothing short of impressive, proven by its recent rankings as 18th best university in the UK (The Guardian 2024) and 177th worldwide (Times Higher Education 2024). So, it should come as no surprise to learn that it ranked highly in a new league table by Shanghai Rankings, placing in the top 100 in 10 academic research areas, and in the top 200 in 13 more.
Established in 2009, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects evaluates 5,000 universities across 55 subjects, covering a multitude of sciences. The organization ranks universities individually when ranked between 1st and 50th, then places them in ranges.
The University placed 8th in Geography, 11th in Ecology, 25th in Atmospheric Science and 47th in Earth Sciences.
It also placed 51st-75th in Public Administration, Oceanography, Political Sciences, Sociology, and Environmental Science & Engineering.
Additionally, the university placed 76th-100th in Telecommunication Engineering, and 101st-150th in Psychology, Biological Sciences, Business Administration, Agricultural Sciences, Economics, and Water Resources.
The University of Exeter placed in the top 500 spots worldwide in 33 of 55 subjects covered, ranking particularly well among other UK universities. Listed in descending order (considering the upper bounds), it placed 1st-3rd in Environmental Science & Engineering, 2nd in Ecology, 2nd-5th in Agricultural Sciences, 3rd in Atmospheric Science, 5th-9th in Public Administration, 6th-8th in Political Sciences, 7th in Geography, 7th-13th in Sociology, 8th in Earth Sciences, 8th-11th in Telecommunication Engineering, 9th-16th in Education, and 10th in Water Resources.

Shanghai Rankings recognizes the University of Exeter as 151st-200th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, placing 13th-20th in National/Regional Rank.
