A selection of Japanese dishes (Pixabay via Picryl)

★★★★☆

I know the saying, never judge a book by its cover, but the cover of this book is why I picked it up. Who could resist a book with a cat? This book was my first introduction to Japanese literature and I really enjoyed it! It follows this father and daughter who try and uncover people’s lost recipes. The book is made up from several short stories all following the same narrative patten. Parts of it do feel a bit formulaic, however each story has its own aspects which set them apart. Each story was wholesome and full of love, it also introduced me to some Japanese dishes which I hadn’t heard of before! My only wish was that the book went into more show rather than tell. However, this was a sweet, quick, easy read that left me feeling a bit happier with the world than before. I think this is a great place to begin with Japanese literature and I’m excited to start reading more!
