The latest Captain America instalment, Brave New World, has hit theatres and it has come with a few mixed reviews. This film follows the character Sam Wilson as he takes on the Captain America handle and is a continuation of the Falcon and Winter Solider TV series. So, was the film good, or is it just another Marvel sequel?
I am not personally the biggest Marvel critic. I think Marvel films are fun and that’s why I enjoy them. Brave New World is no exception to this. The film is fun and full of action. These aspects are what drew people to Marvel films in the first place and they’re not lacking in this movie. While this movie wasn’t up to the standard of the pre-Endgame films, it wasn’t bad by any means.

The action scenes throughout the film were incredibly well done and they all looked great on the screen. The cinematography in general was good and pretty consistent with other Marvel films. What stood out the most to me was the acting in the film. Anthony Mackie was, of course, great in his role, but the star performance went to Harrison Ford. He had stepped into the role of Thaddeus Ross after the death of previous actor William Hurt and, in my opinion, did an incredible job.
Another aspect of the movie I loved was its short runtime. The film clocked in at 118 minutes, making it just under two hours long. This was so refreshing compared to other Marvel films, which have a tendency to push to the three-hour mark. The film felt like a perfect length, and the plot wasn’t overly stretched out.
I think the worst part of the film was the marketing. I think the marketing was trying to put people in seats so desperately that it did the film overall a disservice. Throughout the trailers we got images and clips of the Red Hulk, however, the entire film is spent building up to the reveal. So, by having the big twist already out in the trailers, it fell flat. However, I don’t think this is strictly a Marvel problem, recently trailers have been showing too much of the movies they’re promoting.

The actual plot of the movie was fine. It was a sequel to the 2008 Hulk film, which either no one has watched or remembers. I think there could’ve been a bit more creativity in the writing but I didn’t hate it. It mostly felt a bit random, and while I get trying to tie previous films together, I don’t think it was needed.
Overall, I think this film was better than many recent Marvel projects, and if you are a Marvel fan, I suggest watching it once it comes out on streaming services. However, at this point, I think it’s almost unreasonable to expect any new Marvel films to hit the Infinity Saga levels of success.
