Captain Marvel – Review

They tried to sabotage it. They tried to bring it down. They tried to make sure no one saw it. But Captain Marvel soared above it all. I’m sure you’ve heard by now of the smear campaign against Brie Larson and her new movie for Marvel Studios, but in case you haven’t, here’s what went […]

Don’t you know that you’re toxic?

The casting couch. We’ve all heard the stories confessing the dark truths of Hollywood’s underbelly. From Marilyn Monroe to the child star, Shirley Temple, Hollywood has a long, ugly history with sexual harassment, stemming from an endemic lust for power by those placed in positions of authority. A throwback to the ‘golden-era’ of old Hollywood, […]

Make mine Marvel

Marvel Studios has changed the superhero game in the past decade, introducing the “cinematic universe” approach which has been steadily copied by the likes of DC, Star Wars and Universal. However, Marvel remains without a doubt the most successful architects of the “cinematic universe” – its umbrella of the “MCU” is over 20 films in […]

Daredevil: Season 3 – Review

13 episodes. 13 damn episodes. The obsession with this arbitrary number has certainly proved unlucky for the Netflix corner of the MCU. Even those who sat through 26 episodes of Harlem’s Hero and the mercifully shorter 23 episodes of a posh white brat not doing nearly enough fist-ing greeted their cancellation with a mild shrug and […]

Ant-Man and the Wasp – Review

2015’s Ant-Man was one of Marvel’s lighter fares, following hot on the heels of the smash hit sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ant-Man was a considerably more fun film, without the usual links to other marvel films – although there were still references to the greater Marvel universe. The sequel plays in very much the […]

Review – Venom

Now, more than ever, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to superhero movies. The enormous box-office successes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has studio executives spilling their coffee left and right as they scramble to find the next character to throw onto the big screen. Up to bat next is antisocial anti-hero Venom. […]

Grossed out

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe should have been left stumped by the end of Infinity War. Yet – without giving too much away – the conclusions the film ends on are weightless, taking away the dramatic punch of the movie. Why? Because there’s a sequel around the corner and furthermore, certain creative actions of […]

As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell As editors of student newspapers at all 24 Russell Group universities, we stand united against the Russell Group statement which declared ‘no detriment’ or ‘safety net’ policies not to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘necessary’ for students at this time.

Having listened to students at our universities, we are calling on the Russell Group to act compassionately and empathetically and to reconsider their stance on ‘no detriment’ politics for assessments this year.

Students deserve to be listened to.
