Exeter City slumped to a fourth-consecutive defeat in League One as Huddersfield Town only required one goal to claim defeat at St James Park.

Leo Castledine’s impressive goal midway through the first half was the only thing to split the two sides, as the Grecians now slip to 18th in the league, only two points clear of the relegation zone.

Exeter’s Josh Magennis had the chance to put them in front early on from seven yards, but the chance was squandered and Huddersfield responded well to the quick start from the home team by taking control of the game from thereafter.

A Jack Fitzwater header, a rebound after Pierce Sweeney’s own attempt hit the bar, saw the hosts think they had an equalizer, only for the goal to be disallowed. The Terriers were far and away the better team in the second half, and even though they failed to take a number of chances to put the game to bed, one goal was sufficient for the three points.

Gary Caldwell’s side have now lost their past five matches in all competitions, although he was still positive in his assessment, and ‘liked a lot of what [he] saw today.’

‘If we play like that more often I am sure we will beat many teams in this league,’ he added, after his side and their opponents had equal shares of the ball at the end of the ninety minutes.

Exeter make a trip to Lincoln for their next league match this weekend.
