‘Tis the season for some winter book recommendations! Whether you’re an epic fantasy lover or prefer a cosier read, this list has something for everyone.

The Fantasy Book – The Northern Lights by Philip Pullman

If you lean more towards an action-adventure fantasy read, this is the one for you.

This first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy is set in a snowy and wintry atmosphere. In a world where people’s souls are reflected in animal companions called Daemons, 11-year-old Lyra is forced to travel to the cold North to save her friend Roger from a group of child snatchers called the Gobblers.

Even better, once you’ve finished reading, you can watch the BBC series adaptation featuring Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson, for even more of an atmospheric setting.

The Classic Novel – Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

If coming-of-age stories are more your thing, give Little Women a read.

Little Women details the transition of the March siblings from childhood to adulthood, learning how to navigate their independent lives while maintaining strong family bonds, carrying themes reflective of the Christmas spirit, such as family and generosity. This makes it the perfect read for the Christmas period.

The Romance – Fake Skating by Lynn Painter

Love a heartwarming read filled with ice skating and fake dating? Recently released Fake Skating may be your cup of tea.

After returning to Minnesota, Dani hopes to reunite with her childhood best friend, Alec, only to discover that he has become the town’s star hockey player. Following a misunderstanding, Alec and Dani find themselves fake dating, but can they keep their feelings under wraps, or will they fulfil the childhood best friends to lovers trope?

The Mystery – Twelve Slays of Christmas by Jacqueline Frost

Blend the whodunit plot with a cosy Christmas ambience, and you are offered the Twelve Slays of Christmas

However, Holly’s plans for a simple Christmas are upended when the president of the Mistletoe Historical Society is murdered and left at Holly’s tree farm, with her father looking increasingly suspicious.
