The Australian Open did not disappoint with highlights ranging from surprise upsets, career defying victories and even the surprise appearance of a certain tennis legend all taking place down under.
Both of the men’s finalists had to face their fair share of hurdles to reach the final with Djokovic being placed in the unusual position of the underdog against Jannik Sinner, who had the advantage of youth and previous triumphs in their last five matches on his side. Whilst many pinned him as the natural victor, Djokovic has long proven he has never been one to listen to the odds and performed a defying comeback by besting Sinner 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to secure his place in the Australian Open final.
Alcaraz’s determination and mental fortitude was also tested to its limits in his own grueling match against Zverev, with the blistering heat and an excruciating fit of cramp leaving him unable to run in the third set and momentarily seeming to crush his dreams of achieving a career Grand Slam. However, after a controversial medical time out, a rejuvenated Alcaraz soared his way to victory in a five-set thriller with him contending afterwards that he had to “put his heart” into what was one of his most “physically demanding matches” in his career.
These triumphs set the stage for a historic final and the stakes for both players could not be higher, with Djokovic searching for his recording breaking 25th Grand Slam and Alcaraz seeing to break his unlucky losing streak of quarter final losses in the tournament. The tension could be felt even before the match started, with the final being watched on by the former Spanish champion Rafael Nadal. Ultimately after a thrilling battle, Alcaraz’s ferocity on the court proved to be too much for Djokovic with his groundbreaking victory making him the youngest man in history to complete the Grand Slam in all four major titles.
The drama was no less intense in the women’s final with Rybakina snatching glory from world number one Sabalenka by two sets to one marking her second Grand Slam win and her first ever Australian Open title. Despite the pressure mounting with Rybakina being down 3-0 in the deciding set, her steely mental resolve allowed her to take back control by winning five games in a row and thus extending her winning streaking from Wimbledon in 2022.
